Our furniture.

Things to know.

Commissioning a handmade piece of furniture is a big decision and we’re so happy you’re considering us to design a piece for you. Handmade furniture isn’t like buying a piece from a store – there are some important differences. The following notes come from the common questions we get about our handmade furniture. Of course, if you have further questions, please reach out, we’re always happy to continue the conversation.

Variation in size and shape of your piece

Real timber moves with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. It expands in winter and shrinks in summer. Tables tops may flex in one direction in summer and the other direction in winter. Drawer and door alignment will change over the seasons. In most cases these changes will be too small to notice during normal use. Sometimes you might notice them. Sometimes you might feel some subtle variation in the finished surface as a result of our hand sanding and finishing. Expect your piece to be within a 1-3mm of the design dimensions. These variations are all part of the beauty of handmade, solid timber furniture. Of course, where exact dimensions are required for installation, we will make sure it fits.

Timber colour and grain variation

Real timber comes from real trees and every tree is unique. Natural timber will vary in colour, tint, grain direction and grain variation. We hand select each board of timber for every piece we make, painstakingly choosing colour and grain for the most beautiful result. Again, the variation in the timber is part of the natural beauty of handmade furniture.

Timing and deadlines

Making solid timber furniture takes time. We are usually booked up between 3-6 weeks in advance, and once started, a piece of handmade furniture can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks to make depending on the complexity of the piece. All our pieces are custom designed and made – we never make the same piece twice – and that means the exact completion date for your piece is hard to predict. The expected completion date we set allows for some of the challenges we will meet along the way, but sometimes it takes a little longer to get the piece just the way we want. We will keep you informed along the build process and will always let you know as soon as any potential delay occurs. All we ask is that you are understanding along the journey. Having said all that, we’ve never missed a definite deadline for a gift or special occasion.

Maintaining your furniture

Your furniture will be finished with a hard wearing “hard wax oil” which requires no regular surface maintenance. It is water, heat, stain and alcohol resistant but like any timber furniture, care should be taken to avoid extreme temperatures and to wipe up spills as soon as possible. The timber itself of course can still scratch and dent and care should be taken to minimize this kind of damage.
